The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the ancient chefs made use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, mint and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
