The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into antiquity, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, rue and dill. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
