The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be observed far back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As we move on, there are a couple of interesting books which appeared in the 1300s : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the period. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications are in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, leisure time and disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Citrus Mint Punch recipe.
