The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient records were just very simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, we find a couple of books published in the 1300s : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food served to the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. For the next few years, the powerful and rich strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
