The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an increase in books on cooking, some of which are now in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
