The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into ancient history, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of books published in the 14th Century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of those days. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the twentieth century, recipe books were starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. |
