20 medium clams
8 cloves fresh garlic, minced
6 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp chopped parsley
2 tbsp fine dry bread crumbs
1 salt to taste
1 cup white wine or sherry
1 chile, chopped
Directions
Soak clams in salty water for 5 hours before preparing dish, and
rinse. In a large pan, saute garlic in oil. Add parsley and clams;
cover 5 to 10 minutes to open the clams. Once clams are open, add
bread crumbs, salt, white wine and chile. Move pan back and forth
for about 5 minutes over medium heat until sauce thickens.

The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes back into distant history, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Moving on, there are two recipe books which appeared in the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of that period. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
