The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into history, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early records were just very simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like bay, rue and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Classic Cole Slaw recipe.
