The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many different herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices caused a torrent in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private collections. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
