The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, mint and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an outbreak in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. When we get to the 20th century, recipe books are highly popular mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
