The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, fennel and asafoetida. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
