The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the early Romans used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in recipe books, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books are starting to become popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and disposable income. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
