The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes back into the far past, at least as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, fennel and dill. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of that period. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs led to a surge in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in private collections. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
