The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient cooks used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, we find a couple of cookery books published in the fourteenth century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an outbreak in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
