The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into distant history, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move on, we find some recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals cooked for the upper classes of that period. During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
