6 oz semi-sweet chocolate coarsel
3 each egg yolks
2/3 cup icing sugar
1/3 cup coca-cola
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Directions
Place chocolate & cola in a sm saucepan and cook over low heat,
stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from heat & let stand to
cool. Refrigerate until cold. Beat butter til it's light & fluffy.
Beat in egg yolks, one at a time. Gradually add chocolate mixture.
Beat in icing sugar.
Hmmm... raw egg yolks are a little dangerous these days... but I
believe they can be replaced with a substitute available in
cake-baking outlets.

The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be observed way back into history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient chefs used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, fennel and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
