The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes far back into history, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also recounts how the chefs of Roman times used many spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Coca Cola Pot Roast recipe.
