The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Closer to modern times, there are two interesting books which date from the 1300s - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time.

In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an increase in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections.

During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and having more money.

The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site.
