The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into distant history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting books from the fourteenth century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that time. During the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were in high demand, due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
