The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also describes how the early Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and dill. Later on, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 1300s ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the upper classes. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
