The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, we find two interesting cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food cooked for the upper classes of that period. For the next few years, the powerful and rich houses tried to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
