The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into antiquity, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Moving on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the upper classes of that time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cook books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. |
