The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced back into distant history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, early recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. During the time of the Romans a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an outbreak in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Cocoanut Macaroons recipe.
