The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, these, ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and dill.

Later, we find two recipe books from the fourteenth century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of that time.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an increase in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in private cookery archives.

For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich competed to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth.

The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
