The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Later, there were a couple of interesting recipe books from the 1300s ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices caused an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books are in high demand, due to increased literacy, leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
