The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many spices, including some that we all recognise for example bay, rue and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in recipe publications, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
