The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient records were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations created a surge in cookery books, some of which are now in academic collections. Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
