The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, mint and dill. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
