The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, old cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the period. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe books are starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. |
