The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, these, ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of that period. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
