The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into history, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the chefs of Roman times used many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused an eruption in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cook books were highly popular as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
