The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later, we find two books which appeared in the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
