The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman cooks used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example bay, rue and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
