The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the Romans used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know like thyme, fennel and dill. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books are in high demand, due to more people being able to read, leisure time and disposable income. |
