The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, old recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later, we have two interesting books which were published in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a surge in publications on food, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
