The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed back into history, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman cooks made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and dill. Over the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Coffee Cream Pie recipe.
