The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes far back into distant history, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the ancient chefs used many herbs, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for a torrent in recipe books, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
