The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the ancient Romans made use of many different spices, including many that are still in use today like basil, fennel and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on food, some of which are now in private libraries. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
