The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, mint and parsley. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
