The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into distant history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of the time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs caused a surge in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
