The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals were divided into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. He also tells us how the cooks of his times used many spices, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes led to a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries. By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having more leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
