The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have two books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
