The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into history, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, these, old records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef describes how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, rue and dill. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
