The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed far back into distant history, in truth as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the cooks of Roman times used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to a torrent in recipe books, most of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
