The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as bay, mint and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and spices led to an outbreak in manuscripts on food, some of which are now in private cookery archives. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications were increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Colonel Sanders' Macaroni Salad recipe.
