The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, these, early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, fennel and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an increase in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
