The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into history, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know such as basil, rue and asafoetida. For the next few years, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
