The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, mint and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
