The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting recipe books from the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of those days. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Confectioners' Icing recipe.
