The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked far back into ancient history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were a couple of cookery books which date from the 1300s : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich. Over the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery books were highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and having more money to spend. The introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
