The History of Recipes

It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated.

Later, we have two interesting cookery books published in the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich people of that period.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted an outbreak in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

During the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers.

The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site.
