The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into distant history, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Closer to modern times, we find two interesting books dating from the 1300s ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the nobility of the period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and having more money to spend. |
