The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, fennel and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations prompted an eruption in books on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
